Looking at the price distribution of the current set of iPad Apps (those written specifically for the iPad or recompiled to specifically support the iPad) shows a much greater percentage of Paid vs Free apps than their iPhone brethren.
Where free iPhone apps typically make up >80% of the AppStore Catalog, free iPad apps only make up about 25%. I imagine developers are hoping that if folks are willing to spend their hard earned cash on an iPad, they are likely to buy apps at this time too. This pattern replicates when the iPhone first came out, so it will be interesting to see if iPad follows the same trend towards free over time. (See the Quimondo Q42009 report for more details).
